New Online Interview!
October 29, 2007 | Leave a Comment
Writer Jen Burke has posted part 1 of a two-part interview with me on TheNervousBreakdown.com. She’s interested in the intersection of sex, law, politics and culture. The most important topic we discussed is the mainstreaming of sex work. Now that I think of it, I should’ve brought up the sheer resistance the UK has had to the TV version of Belle de Jour’s book. Oh well.
She asked a few more questions that I’ve really wanted to answer, especially in part II. I’ll post here when it’s up.
And check out her book on Amazon — A Life Less Convenient: Letters To My Ex. Not only is she a good writer, but she really has an incredible story to tell.
Book 1: The Foundation Wins an Award
October 26, 2007 | Leave a Comment
Woo-hoo! It’s a small honor, to be sure, but The Internet Escort’s Handbook Book 1: The Foundation garnered an Honorable Mention in the Nonfiction category of the Writer’s Digest 15th Annual International Self-Published Book Awards. The winners will be published in the March/April issue of Writer’s Digest.
It’s very exciting because I certainly did not expect to win an award, although I fantasized about a first place in Nonfiction. Kudos to the judges for looking past whatever knee-jerk reactions they had to the actual content of the book (they also judged on presentation).
I would love to enter Book 2: Advertising and Marketing in the upcoming year’s contest but I don’t know if I’ll have a retail-ready printed copy ready by the May 1 deadline. If not, well, there’s always the following year. It would just be cool to be in the contest two years in a row.
Although if I have to wait to enter Book #2, it will probably be in tandem with Book #3. I really am pushing to get Book #3 out in 2008 too. Just thining long-term.
It’s a very good feeling to get a little something like this.
Interview by Gwen Masters

Well-known erotica writer Gwen Masters interviewed me in tandem with her book review of Book 1: The Foundation. She asked interesting questions that required thoughtful replies, not the glib responses I’ve given before (because these weren’t the usual questions).
Read the full interview (and book review) on her blog. Make comments! Link to it! I’m thrilled with the results.
And if you’re want some steamy reading, take a look at Gwen’s site.

Reviewed in $pread Magazine

Finally! I’m excited about my most recent review in $pread Magazine. The review was positive and it’s really a stamp of approval. Plus, it’s rather nice to have a review that was printed in a magazine. Not knocking my online reviews. I think everyone will agree that having a printed page to show off is a nice feeling.
You can read the full review on the book’s Review page.
Review on FeministReview.org
April 20, 2007 | Leave a Comment
A new review of Book 1: The Foundation is available both on the book’s site and FeministReview.org.
It’s not my favorite review, mostly because the reviewer seems to have skimmed the book, missing details such as the number of books in the series (mentioned in the intro, the last few pages of the book and the book’s site) and the entire point of the book/series. She is a mainstream reviewer and a sample of what I have to look forward to as I move more into the public eye. The review is positive, even if the tone seems snarkier (to me) with every successive reading.
There are four more reviews that should be straggling in. (I know one of them is on the way.) By the time all the reviews for Book 1 are in, I should be submitting review galleys of Book 2 in advance of the pub date. And so it goes.
PS: Still giggling hysterically about the reviewer’s assumption that I am “raking in the cash” with this book series.
Use Me to Make Money!
March 26, 2007 | Leave a Comment
I don’t know why I didn’t think about this before. If you believe in my book (or have even read it!), you can use Amazon to make a little money off of it.
Amazon has its own affiliate program, called Amazon Associates. You sign up and your information is between you and Amazon. It has nothing to do with your Amazon buyer’s profile. No one else can access your Associates info. After signing up, you pick the products you want to feature on your Web site or blog and Amazon gives you the code. Amazon sells a lot more than books, so you can make money off any number of things.
If you know your way around HTML, you can grab the essential part of the product’s hyperlink (example: http://www.amazon.com/dp/0978094409/, my book) then add your own special referrer code. It makes a fairly simple and direct hyperlink that you can use anywhere without any fuss. The ones Amazon provide for you are a bit messier.
Although their percentages on items can vary, I’ve been getting a $1 fee per sale of my own book (4.01%, according to them). I have somehow sold other things with higher referral fees through my Amazon link, like jewelry (no, it wasn’t for me!).
I know $1 doesn’t seem like a lot. I am working on my own affiliate plan (it was derailed last summer – long story) and it will be very generous to those who sell a lot of books. As far as I can tell, Amazon’s affiliate program is a flat rate, no matter how much your link sells. Still, for those who don’t mind helping me promote my book, you can join the Associates program, place a link on your site or blog or anywhere online and make a little money in the process.
Remember, you don’t have to just promote my book. You can pick anything Amazon sells and promote it with your affiliate code – including your own Wish List!
Happy selling!
First Radio Interview with The Scarlot Harlot
February 8, 2007 | Leave a Comment
My first-ever radio interview will be this Saturday on San Francisco station 88.9FM from 2-3pm. Renowned sex worker activist Carol Leigh (aka The Scarlot Harlot) will interview me about my book, The Internet Escort’s Handbook Book 1: The Foundation, and then we will have an in-studio discussion with several other sex workers. (She hasn’t told me who they are.)
If you’re going to be in the Bay Area, try to tune in!
I will post a recording of the interview if and when it’s available.
UPDATE: The MP3 file is finally up and ready to listen. It’s a big one and I’m buried in the middle, but the whole show was great and is worth the listen. Go over to the Neighborhood Public Radio blog and enjoy! (update posted 5/8/07)
New Review!
January 16, 2007 | Leave a Comment
Book 1: The Foundation has been reviewed by The Electronic Journal of Human Sexuality. You can read the full review here.
It’s a very positive review and an important one to me. Because it’s highly unlikely these books will reviewed by the usual book-review outlets; getting a positive review from an academic source means a lot. It’s nice to know my work has passed muster with those who take sex seriously.
The minor negative points of the review made me realize, as ever, that I need to work on communicating clearly. There’s several writing lessons right there. On the other hand, points that I felt would be viewed as negatives weren’t even mentioned (maybe he ran out of room).
I’m quite happy with the review, so please go read it. (It’s also posted on the book’s site here.)
On a personal note: last night I recieved a message from Dr. Morrison. I was too nervous to open the e-mail. This morning I finally did, adrenaline pumping, dreading the news. It was a simple message that my review was up. Turns out there was nothing to get overly excited about. But I’d managed to ruin breakfast for myself as I was too wound up to eat. I spent the next hour pacing around until I burned off the energy. I’m sure there’s a lesson to be learned there, too.
